On Friday night, SCMVS hosted our famous ‘Michaelmas MedVet Dinner’. This was a night filled with plenty of fine dining and the opportunity to speak to and spend time with fellow members of the Society. We also had lots of exciting entertainment: the whole society singing ‘MVST’ to the tune of ‘This is Me’, as well as Dr Gavin Jarvis playing guitar and singing about Scatchard plots. It was a lovely night for all and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Many thanks to the catering team, as well as our committee (particularly Bethan, Chris and Ahmed) for all their hard work in organising the dinner.

On Monday night, many of the undergraduate Selwyn medics and vets attended a formal dinner at Magdalene College. This formal swap was organised by our Ents Officer, and was a lovely opportunity for all three years of our Society members to socialise with other medics and vets from Magdalene and Trinity Hall. This proved to be a very enjoyable evening and the Society is looking forward to the next formal swap. Stay tuned!

On Friday evening, Selwyn MedVetSoc hosted a fun and interactive Clinical Talk, kindly presented by sixth year Selwyn Medic, Sam Webb. The title of the talk was ‘Is there a Doctor on Board?’: students learned how to look after acutely unwell patients using a systematic ‘ABCDE’ approach.

There were plenty of opportunities for students to play the role of the doctor and decide how best to manage unwell fellow student actors (as seen below!). Plenty of chocolate and sweet treats were also consumed 🙂

This Thursday, the MedVet Society organised a nice evening meal out for all undergraduate members. This proved to be a lovely evening at Nando’s, followed by a trip to Pizza Hut for some well-needed dessert and milkshakes.

During week 5 of this term, the Selwyn MedVetSoc had its first session of our new ‘Clinical Initiative’ scheme. This gives the opportunity for undergraduate Selwyn medics to spend half a day shadowing one of our Selwyn Clinical Students. Selwyn fifth year medic, Sohini, kindly showed some first-year students around the Clinical School and Addenbrookes Hospital, giving them a taste of clinical school life. They had the opportunity to visit the hospital, see patients and take observations. This is a great way for our preclinical students to get to know some older students that they would otherwise not have a chance to meet. We look forward to organising more of these sessions!

This Saturday evening the society had its first social event of the year: an exciting pizza night! There was some delicious pizza (unfortunately eaten before the picture was taken!) and good chat too 🙂

Thanks a lot to everyone who attended, especially Natasha and Ahmed (our lovely Welfare and Ents officers) who organised the event and made sure it ran smoothly. We hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did!

On 24th-25th September, Selwyn College hosted a medical residential for year 13 students (or equivalent) who are considering applying to study Medicine at Cambridge.

The first day of the residential consisted of lectures, practical sessions and supervisions that reflected the pre-clinical part of the Cambridge course (years 1-3). The lectures were on topics ranging from the anatomy of bipedalism to a physiology lecture on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. The second day comprised of sessions that reflected the clinical component (years 4-6) of the course, including an interactive CPR practice session.

We hope that they found the experience worthwhile and that they gained an insight into the life of a medical student at Selwyn College. We wish them the best for their upcoming applications!

It was great to hold the lent term Selwyn MedVetSoc dinner tonight. We had a wonderful turnout from undergraduates, clinical students and fellows. At the drinks reception we also took our annual society photo in the new SCR. Thanks to everyone who came and we hope you had a great evening!

Today Selwyn College Medical and Veterinary Society welcomed distinguished pathologist Dr Ian Calder to give a fascinating talk on determining the causes of sudden, accidental, or deliberate death. Dr Calder covered wide ranging topics including murder, suicide, sudden death and infant mortality. He explored some of the key aspects of forensic pathology including methods of working out the “who, when, where and what” of a death.

We are very grateful to Dr Calder for taking the time to talk at Selwyn.

Today for Shrove Tuesday, our welfare officer Karolina hosted a great turnout of 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, with seemingly unlimited (and delicious) pancakes.
